Asphalt emulsion sealcoatings are a blend of emulsion specialty chemicals, fillers, and pigments. Practically odorless and non-irritating, emulsion sealcoating is easy to use and safe to apply. Easy-to-Use Protection for your Pavement

Resurfacer is a hard-based asphalt emulsion sealcoating that is easy to use and cures to an extremely attractive, touch, wear-resistant and smooth surface.

Special Asphalt Products formulates Resurfacer with a combination of specially refined asphalt emulsions, mineral fillers, advanced polymer modifiers and pigments. Resurfacer is a proven performer in a wide range of both commercial and residential applications and provides the pavement maintenance professional with a complete range of benefits.

Application Information

Asphalt Preparation

Clean area to be sealed. Treat weeds with an approved week killer, if required. Fill all cracks 1/4″ or larger with an approved elastomeric crack and joint filler, such as Special Asphalt Products Premier or ASTM D-1190 Crack and Joint Sealant. Remove all broken asphaltic concrete; prime and patch area with new asphaltic concrete (following manufacturer’s recommendations). Wash, sweep, blow or vacuum surface to assure a clean, bondable surface.

Application of Sealcoat

Application is normally 25-45 square feet per gallon of undiluted Resurfacer. Dilute Resurfacer with 10-20% of clean water to a smooth creamy consistency that is compatible with the application method. Apply using hand or motorized squeegee or spray equipment.

Sealcoat Recommendations

Resurfacer can be applied at temperatures above 60 degrees F and humidity of 75%. Keep Resurfacer from freezing. If pavement is rough or highly textured, add one to three pounds of silica sand for a smoother finished surface.

Sealcoat Curing

At 60 degrees F and 75% humidity, cure time is approximately 24 hours. Ensure all traffic is kept off completed surfaces until Resurfacer is thoroughly cured or tracking can occur.

Safety Precautions

Wear approved personal-protective gear while cleaning as well as while applying Resurfacer. Generally, Resurfacer is odorless and non-irritating. However, normal safety precautions are advised.

Sealcoat Recommendations

When applying by squeegee, do not overwork Resurfacer XLR8. As this can cause premature drying. In hot weather, curing may take place in as little as 20 minutes. When overlapping adjacent passes, fog edges to assure smooth application. Resurfacer XLR8 can be applied at temperatures above 60 degrees F and humidity of 75%. If pavement is rough or extremely oxidized, add one to three pounds of silica sand for a smoother finished surface.

Sealcoat Curing

Resurfacer XLR8 can accept foot traffic in as little as 30 minutes after application under optimal conditions. At 60 degrees F and 75% humidity, cure time is approximately 3 hours.

Special Asphalt Products Rhino Seal—Difficult Surfaces

Doubles as Primer & Sealer

Rhino Seal is a specialty coating that doubles as an effective primer and sealer for problematic surfaces. It is fast drying, self-curing, water-based, acrylic modified bituminous emulsion that bonds well to surfaces contaminated by oil, grease, fuel, etc., as well as to polished, smooth aggregates in the the pavement. It is a spray applied or broom applied finished protective sealcoat for asphalt surfaces. This product is designed for use on asphalt to help protect against water penetration, oxidation and deterioration of asphalt surfaces.

  • Works as both a primer and sealer
  • Bonds well with contaminated and polished surfaces

Application Information

Asphalt Preparation

All areas to be sealed shall be free from sand, dirt, dust, oil build-up, grease, and other foreign debris by blowing, scraping, brooming, burning or washing. Fill all cracks 1/4″ or larger with an approved elastomeric crack and joint sealant. Remove all broken asphaltic concrete; prime and patch area with new asphaltic concrete, following manufacturer’s recommendations. Clean all oil-spotted areas and prep with approved oil spot primer.

Application of Sealcoat

Rhino Seal should be thoroughly mixed prior to application. Rhino Seal, as manufactured, requires that water be mixed with product to achieve proper workability for application. Normally, about 50% dilution with water is sufficient. The material should be applied at total application rate of 50 to 100 sq. ft. per gallon. Product should be applied so that coverage is uniform. Any pinholes or unsealed areas should be repaired before opening to traffic.

Asphalt Emulsions

CSS-1—Slow Setting Tack Coat

Product Description

CSS-1 is a cationic emulsion primarily used as a tack coat. The emulsion is used as a tack coat (either as is or diluted 50% with water) or fog seal (diluted 50% with water) and applied with a distributor. CSS-1 consists of specially refined asphalt dispersed in water without the use of clay or similar substances as emulsifying or stabilizing agents. The cationic emulsified asphalt furnished under this specification shall be an emulsion of asphalt cement, water and emulsifying agent. The emulsified asphalt shall be homogeneous. It shall show no separation of asphalt after thorough mixing within 30 days after delivery.

Common Uses

CSS-1 tack coat emulsion is used to bond old pavement to new in many types of applications including: overlays of new pavement to old, pothole patching, joint, curb and gutter interfaces. CSS-1 is also used to bond speed bumps and parking stops onto existing asphalt pavement.

PG 58-28—Hot Applied Sealant

Product Description

SA 58-28 Tack is a hot applied, elastically modified composition of asphalt cement and other modifiers. The sealant contains no solvent, is pre-mixed and packaged, and conforms to the requirements of the specification designated herein. SA 58-28 is comparable to AR4000.
